18U wins the CJ Summer Cyclone Tourney

  • On the heels of a 2nd place finish in the Bridgewater tournament, which saw the team experience their only loss to-date, the Blaze was able to capture the title in Colonia this past weekend.

In Saturday action, the team was 3-0 with wins over North Jersey Extreme 8-0, NY Panthers 6-3 and South Jersey Venom 11-6.  The “runs allowed” tie-breaker saw the team secure the 3 seed in a 12 team field.

Sunday began with an All-Shore Championship rematch vs. the 6th seeded Brick Bombers and the game followed a similar script as the one two weeks prior.  After spotting the Bombers 2 runs in the 1st inning, the offense was quiet until the 4th, when the Blaze took the lead 3-2 and then never looked back as the mercy win was secured in the 6th; 10-2.  The 2nd game was a Saturday rematch with the 7th seed NY Panthers, who were fresh off an upset over the 2nd seeded Bridgewater Panthers.  The Blaze scored runs in each of the first four innings while 1-hitting the Panthers.  A second mercy win was recorded, 12-2 after 5 innings, and it was on to the Championship matchup against the #1 seed, Monmouth Surf.

In an emotionally charged game, the Surf jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after 1 inning.  The Blaze was able to hold the Surf at bay (pun intended) until a 6 run outburst in the 4th, put the team ahead 7-3.  Monmouth mounted a rally of their own with 5 runs in the 6th leaving the Blaze short 9-7 with 3 outs to go.  The 7th inning started with 3 of the first 4 batters singling to load the bases.  Consecutive hits by the middle of the lineup pulled the Blaze even and then saw the team recapture the lead.  When the dust settled, the Blaze had put up 5 runs when their backs were to the wall and approached the bottom of the 7th with a 12-9.  That’s how the score ended as 3 consecutive fly balls to the Outfield ended the game.

With a record of 15-1-1, the Blaze will finish out June with the War at the Shore tournament this weekend, followed by the NJ Heatwave to finish out the month.
