Blaze News

14U and 18U Blaze are heating up in July.

  • Both teams have been on a tear over the last month as they have combined to win over 80 games this season!

The 18U team has made it to the finals in 3 of their last 4 tournaments.  Here are some of the highlights:

The team was Finalists in the Sid Lee Viking Classic in South Brunswick over 4th of July weekend.  Saturday saw the team achieve a prefect 3-0 record and the #1 seed with victories over Carteret, Epic Tempest, and Southern Tier Smoke.  After a come-from-behind victory over Shore Crush, the Blaze came up short vs. the home team, Vikings.

Up next, was the Union Summer Sizzler.  Once again, the team achieved the #1 seed with a perfect Saturday with wins over CJ Tremors, Rebelz, and CJ Renegades.  After knocking off Blaze 16U and Monmouth Surf, the Blaze settled for Finalists after dropping a rematch with the CJ Renegades.

July 23rd and 24th found the Blaze back in Union in the USSSA Summer Slam, where their ultimate fate would be different.  Again, the Blaze captured the #1 seed with a perfect 3-0 record with wins over Abington Angels, Camden Angels, and NJ Fury.  After a rematch mercy win over the Fury, the Blaze won a classic pitcher’s duel 2-1 over Staten Island Breakers in the finals.

The team is 15-4 in July as it heads into its last tournament this weekend at Lacey.  Overall, the team is 28-12 with one Championship and 3 Finals to its credit.

Not to be outdone by their older-sister team, the 14U boasts 2 Championships and a Finalist in the last three weeks to go along with an undefeated Summer League Championship.

In the Union Summer Sizzler, the Blaze rolled over the competition with a 6-0 weekend and Championship.  The Blaze notched 2 wins over Maplewood/South Orange and South Plainfield, and a win over Westfield before facing nemesis Basking Ridge in the Finals.  After seeing a 3-run, 1st inning lead turn into a 7-3 deficit after two, the Blaze persevered for their first tournament Championship of the Summer.

With the competition turned up for the Newtown Rock Young Guns tournament the following weekend, the team was up to the task.  Venom was up first and Blaze had revenge on is mind after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 game in South Brunswick two weeks prior.  The Blaze won 5-1 and now lead the season series with their rivals, 2-1.  A tie to the Long Island Pride, was followed by a 4-3 victory over the Conklin Mass. Raiders.  The 2-0-1 record was good enough for the #3 seed out of 14 teams.  In a much harder than expected game vs. the #14 seed, Blaze broke it open late for a 10-4 over Nitro (Pittsburgh, PA), before cruising to a 9-3 victory over NJ Heat.  The Semi-Final saw a classic nail-biter, 2-1 victory over NJ Flames.  In the Finals, the Blaze ran out of gas and was ousted by the host team 7-4.

Union Summer Slam saw the Blaze in very unfamiliar territory with a 1-2 record after Saturday’s play and a #6 seed of #9.  A loss to #1 seed, Lady Volcanos from VA. did not really sit well and the team vowed to get another shot at them on Sunday.  Those wishes were answered with convincing mercy wins over the Long Island Surge and Holmdel Hornets to start the day.  In the Finals, the Blaze got 5 runs in the first frame and never looked back in route to a 10-6 victory and Championship.

Sandwiched between the Rock and Union tournaments, the team defended it summer league Championship with consecutive wins Tuesday through Thursday of last week.  After mercy wins over Bridgewater and Skylands, the Blaze faced a much tougher task against Flemington than the previous 22-0 game in mid-June.  The final was 8-1 and the Blaze were undefeated Champions of MSGSL to go with their CJFSL Championship from Spring.

As the team rolls on into its last two tournaments, they have tied the previous team’s wins record at 53.  With 60 wins in its sights, the team is currently 53-13-3.
